Ramgopal Varma's latest delivery Phoonk is based on Yendamuri's Tulasidalam. There are a lot of films made on this subject in most of the languages in the world - Blackmagic. What makes the difference in Phoonk is the touch of Ramgopal Varma. Even though, the producers challenge to the audience to watch the film alone stands a mere publicity stunt, Ramgopal Varma's attempt in convincingly portray this subject is successful.

Rajeev (Sudeep) is a reputed builder and happily lives with his wife (Amritha Kanvelkar), daughter Raksha (Channa) and Rohan (Shrey). Naturally, in the business of construction, he develops some enemies and they spell the blackmagic on Rajeev's daughter Rakhsa. Rajeev, who does not believe in this rubbish, continues to visit all doctors in the city. On pressure from a friend, finally Rajeev goes to Manza (Zakir Hussain) to check on the blackmagic. Rajeev, for the shock of his life, is surprised at the turn of events from then on. How he fights the spell of the blackmagic and how he rescued his daughter should be seen on the screen.

Even though this is the first film for Sudeep, he delivers a very balanced performance. He playes the character that is stuck confused between science and superstition. Channa is the highlight performance in the film. She is amazing in her role suffering the spell of blackmagic. Same is the case in performance by Shrye as Orhna. Another highlight role is that of Zakir Hussain. Kenni Desai, Amrita and others are content in their roles. Aswini, as Black Magician, might have overacted a bit.

Ramgopal Varma's script and narration ties the audience for the whole span of the film. The film runs demanding constant attention from the audience. Scenes such as Hanuman Calendar turning back, Rajeev's dream etc are superb. Rajeev's dream reminds of the film into the dream. Ramgopal Varma is totally successful in making the film. Kunal Mehta and Parikshti Lalwani impress with their background score.

Bottomline, there are no comedy pathcing scenes or item songs or exciting action sequences in Phoonk, but the film will surely thrill the audience.
